Paul's Malaysia Sketchbook
February 7 - March 3, 1999
I made a trip to the rain forest preserve
surrounding Pedu Lake, just below the Thai border in Peninsular Malaysia. The purpose of this trip, the second of three so far, with pollination biologist Dr. Stephen Buchmann, was to research a children's picture book about the traditional honey hunters living in this forest.
The "Texas Sourcebook" cover is purely a random image. To make a special sketch book for this trip, I removed all the pages from an old hardcover book I found on my shelf that was the right size. Then I bound my own paper into it, alternating pages of lined writing paper and drawing paper. This electronic version contains most of the pages of art in the original book in the approximaye order created. It leaves out the writing pages.
These drawings and watercolors were done on site in the forest or in my room at the resort, often quickly because of schedules and uncomfortable tropical conditions. They were not intended to befinished art, but rather to help me see and remember details of an unfamiliar place more clearly and to document my thought process.
